Essay: Success is a Journey,
Not a Destination

Every society has its own vision of what it means to be a success . In the West, this tends to revolve around a capitalist vision of material prosperity: a big house, a fancy car, nice clothes, and lots of money.

In traditional societies, it often focused on family: lots of kids and grandkids to support a person in old age. But while there are certain stereotypes about what it means to be a success, all of these are moving targets that we never quite seem to hit. Someone else always has more money, a better car, a bigger house. As a result, too many of us feel that we are not successful enough, even if we have more that we could ever need or use.

Our society creates these feelings because, at heart, inadequacy drives capitalism. Businesses need us to feel like we haven’t achieved enough so that we will strive to buy more. When we don’t feel successful, we feel compelled to take actions that will help us to feel more successful, and many businesses use that feeling to convince us that buying things is the way to achieve feelings of success. The problem, of course, is that the cycle never ends. There is always something else to want and strive for.

This is a dark mirror of an essential fact of life: “success” really is a journey and not a destination. Success if about what it means to be someone who tries hard, dedicates time and talent to reaching a goal, and achieves a dream. However, the journey of success is not a yellow brick road paved with gold but rather an effort to find satisfaction and fulfillment in life.

One does not become successful by meeting an arbitrary standard. Consider, for example, a man who believes that earning $10,000,000 will make him a financial success. Does that mean that at $9,999,999 he is unsuccessful? If he then finds $1 in between his couch cushions, what has really changed that made him a success once he has that final dollar than when it was lost in the couch and he simply thought he didn’t have it? In other words, the elements that made the man a success were the hard work, the dedication, and the skills he put into earning his money, not the amount of cash on hand.

Similarly, we must think of success as the process by which we achieve our goals, not the specific goals themselves. One can be a success in any endeavor, but one becomes a success through developing the habits of success. Imagine a woman who wants to be a great artist. She paints day and night, developing her skills and undertaking and amazing amount of work. She fills galleries with her paintings, but one day an art critic praises one of them and suddenly their value skyrockets. Did the critic’s validation transform the artist into a success, or was her success in the journey that she undertook in creating the work that others would eventually value?

Ultimately, the only person who can define success for us is ourselves. We must decide what it means to be a success. For most of us, success is not a specific goal but rather the striving, the dedication, and the drive to reach that goal. Picking a goal is an arbitrary end point, and sticking too rigidly to it risks cutting off our success too soon. Rather than saying “I am a success because I earned a million dollars,” try saying “I am a success because I work hard, strive to be better every day, and receive rewards commensurate with my efforts.” By defining success as what we do rather than a specific level of achievement, we can more clearly see that success is a journey rather than a destination. After all, if you reach a destination, you stop traveling, and success is about never stopping.

4 Tips for Writing an Essay on Personal Success

May 5, 2018 | Paper Topics

You’ve achieved success. Now, it’s time to write about it

One of the common essays that professors will assign is a personal success essay. These are usually short and are rarely longer than 1 or 2 pages at the max. Sometimes they will be assigned as weekend homework, and sometimes you will have to write them on-the-fly while you’re in class.

Thankfully, though, these essays are some of the easiest assignments you’ll ever get in school. You don’t need to do a lot of critical thinking or outside research. All you need to do is be able to write about yourself.

Today, the Jittery Monks are going to break down how to write a personal success essay that’s bound to get you a top-notch grade. Let’s check it out!

Defining Personal Success

One of the first things that you need to do is define what personal success means to you. For each person, this will be different. For some, it may be the weight that they lost over the summer, and for others, it may be learning a new skill or improving their grades.

Before you sit down to write your paper you need to spend a few minutes thinking about your life, and how you got to the point where you’re at now. Think about the improvements that you’ve made throughout your life and how they made you the person that you are today. All of these are small personal successes that led to the greater personal success of shaping who you are.

Now that you’ve outlined what your successes are, you need to decide whether you want to focus on one particular aspect, or how everything worked together.

For instance, you may decide to focus on your health. You’ll want to think of a critical point where you decided to change. After, you’ll want to outline specific events and decisions that you made over time in regards to fitness, diet, and habits. You’ll want to conclude with an encouraging note to others who are on a similar path.

Another example may look like you talking about a new skill that you learned. Talk about why you were drawn to learning the skill in the first place, and your first time practicing the skill. Spend time discussing the challenges and obstacles that you had to overcome, and how you learned with each small success. Conclude your paper with how learning the skill has helped to benefit your life.

Whatever the case may be, find the topic which you want to talk about and write it down on a piece of paper. Underneath this, list the steps it took to achieve success. This will be the rough outline of your personal success essay.

Maybe this weekends success can be getting an A+ grade on a success essay that you never even had to write.

4 Tips to Write a Grade-A Success Essay

Now that you know exactly what you want to write about, it’s time to put some ink on the paper! These are the Jittery Monks’ top 4 tips to write a successful success essay (pun intended).

#1- Take Pride in Your Accomplishments

The first thing that you need to do is to take pride in your accomplishments. You worked hard to get to where you are today, remember that. It may not feel like it, because it happened slowly over the course of time, but you did what many others failed to do before you.

Take a minute to look at your life from the perspective of an outside. Pretend you met the older version of yourself, and then pretend that you didn’t see them again until years later when you got introduced to their new and improved self. Then you’ll be able to take more pride in what you’ve accomplished.

Being able to take pride in what you’ve done is necessary because it will help you to write better. You’ll be able to convey better the struggles that you went through and the happiness that you felt every time you overcame the challenge. When you’re able to convey your emotions better, your reader will be able to form a connection with your writing, and they will enjoy what you’ve written far more.

#2- Stay Focused

The more focused that you are, the quicker you’ll finish your essay

Remember to stay on topic with your personal success essay. When you’re writing about yourself, it can be easy to get distracted and begin to dive too deep into experiences and thoughts that aren’t directly related to the topic at hand; your success. Keep in mind that this is an essay, not a memoir. Everything that you write needs to have a purpose.

One of the best ways that you can stay on topic is by creating a brief outline. Figure out how exactly how much time that you should spend discussing each small step to success. They should all be balanced out, and each one should be given the attention that it deserves.

To help your readers to be able to better follow your story, make sure you follow a chronological order and list the steps in a way that others can follow.

#3- Maintain a Positive Voice Throughout

Remember that this is an essay about success. It should not be negative. Your audience shouldn’t go away from reading your essay feeling worse about themselves. While it’s important to remember to include challenges and reference “feeling down” before you made certain changes in your life, these should never be the sole focus.

The focus should always be on the positives. What benefits did you achieve with each success? How can others follow in your footsteps? You don’t need to directly engage your readers, but you do need to maintain a positive voice that others find encouraging and uplifting.

If you want to see an example of positive tones, check out this sample.

#4- Make Your Success Essay Easy-to-Read

If you want to get a good grade on your essay, one of the easiest things that you can do is to make it easy to read. Have you ever tried to read through an advanced medical study? It’s almost impossible to read without feeling like your eyes are about to explode. Now compare that to your favorite blog that you keep tabs on. See the difference?

It’s a simple difference of spacing out your paragraphs and dividing your text into easy-to-read blocks. Try to keep your sentences 2 lines or less, and make sure that your paragraphs are no longer than 5 lines max. Try to vary the length of your paragraphs as well. These simple steps will make your success essay a lot easier on the eyes, which goes a long way to making your professor happy.

How to Structure Your Personal Success Essay

A well-structured essay reads like a page-turner. It keeps your reader interested and alert.

Now that you’ve got the tools that you need to create a solid personal success essay, let’s spend a minute going over how to structure your essay. A well-organized essay is sure to get you top marks.

Coming Up With Success Essay Ideas

We briefly discussed this above when we were defining personal success. However, it’s important to pick a success essay idea that others can relate to. That means staying to topics that others have either experienced themselves or can easily visualize.

Writing Your Success Essay Introduction

In your success essay introduction, you’ll want to spend a paragraph giving your readers some background on your particular situation so that they can better understand what you’ll be telling them throughout the body of the essay. Because these are usually short essays, you don’t need a thesis, but you do need to tell your audience the specific topic that you’ll be focusing on.

Filling Up Your Success Essay Body

Your essay body should be pretty self-explanatory. You’ll want to fill it up with your personal journey to success. Discuss how you started on your journey, what convinced you to start, and explain obstacles you overcame along the way. Make sure to talk about some of the emotions that you experienced as this will help to build a better connection with your reader.

Finishing Your Success Essay Conclusion

The conclusion is your victory. Talk about how happy you are to finally be where you are today, and how all of the struggles that you went through made you who you are today. Discuss everything that you learned, and talk about how your success has made a difference in your life and those around you. Finally, end it on a positive note that lets your readers know that success is always achievable, no matter what.

The Jittery Monks’ Ultimate Success Essay Example

You know what’s better than all of the helpful advice in the world? An example to follow. The Jittery Monks have put together a short sample success essay to help you better understand how to apply the principles that you’ve learned. Let’s take a look!

Jeff achieved his goals one step at a time.

My name is Jeff. One year ago, my doctor told me that if I didn’t make a considerable change to my health, that I could possibly be facing heart failure due to how obese I had become. At 19-years-old that’s something hard to hear. These are the years when you’re supposed to be happy, healthy, full of life and energy, not being told that you’re on the path to an early death.

Fast-forward to the present day, and I couldn’t be happier. I’m healthy, I’m strong, and I finally feel full of life. To many people, this is just a dream. To myself, it was once a dream as well, but with a little bit of hard work and dedication, I achieved more than I ever thought possible. This is the story of my success and how I reclaimed my life.

Growing up, I didn’t have the picture-perfect life that you’re used to seeing on your favorite family sitcom. My story started in a small trailer park in a small town nestled deep in the American South called Knightsville. Most of my family had problems with substance abuse. Although I was never able to pick up a drug, I developed my own form of substance abuse: food.

Every day, I would eat more and more. With my family life falling apart around me, all I did was eat more and more. Without going into all of the details of my personal life, it brought me to the point where I was 19-years-old and weighed 400 pounds. I was nowhere near healthy, and I knew it. Hearing that I could possibly die was proof of that.

While that would depress most people, hearing that was just the motivation that I needed to change my life. It was a hard a start. I began waking up two hours early every morning to exercise. At first, it was just a walk around the block (enough to exhaust me at the time). Day-by-day, though, I grew stronger. I woke up with more energy and my morning walks quickly turned into short jogs and bike rides.

During this time, I also had to completely change my diet. I went back home took out all of my junk food, candy, and unhealthy drinks and gave them to my next door neighbor. I went to the store and loaded up on chicken breasts, canned tuna, mixed vegetables, and some fresh fruits. I planned out every meal. It was incredibly hard at first, and my stomach craved my old foods for about two weeks straight. I was too committed to give in now, though.

By sticking to a strictly clean and natural diet along with ever-increasing amounts of daily exercise, I was able to drop 130 pounds in a year. I never thought that this would be possible in my wildest dreams. But as I’m writing this, it is, and I couldn’t be happier.

I didn’t do anything special either. I didn’t take any supplements, I didn’t have money for a gym or private trainers, and I didn’t get a stomach surgery. I just woke up every morning, no matter how tired I was, and dragged my feet around the block. Within the first two months, I was biking four miles every day, and I had started swimming on the weekends. My clean diet kept me energized, and I knew that each day I was getting one step closer to living the life I wanted.

Today, I still eat clean and workout 5 days a week. I’m currently 270 pounds and would like to lose another 80 pounds, but I know this will come in time. My improved health has shown me a whole new side of life. I play sports now, I enjoy hiking, and I was even able to find a girl who shared my interests.

All this goes to prove, that through a little bit of hard work and dedication, you can achieve whatever you set your mind to. One year ago, I was told that I was going to die, and now I feel on top of the world. It’s a feeling like nothing else. So what are you waiting for? Go chase your dreams, and don’t let anybody stop you from being the happiest version of yourself.
