    LGBT Ambassador’s Day

    By Jessie Kaiser , March 18, 2016

    Some of the Sloan family

Welcome to Cambridge, home of the first legal same-sex marriage and the first openly lesbian African-American mayor in the US. While we’re at it, welcome to MIT, a school where the non-discrimination policy includes sexual orientation and gender identity, and to Sloan, which participates in the Reaching Out MBA Fellowship program, has an LGBT club, and throws one heck of a party at the LGBT C-F(x) . But, if you’re anything like me when I applied to business school last year, you gave a quick check (or maybe none at all) to these items, and instead spent your energy wondering about the actual experience here.

A brief list of the questions I asked myself about Sloan: Are there enough LGBT students for me to find community and feel safe? Is this a place where can I explore what my gender expression means for my perceived professionalism? Will I have access to role models who reflect the type of family and career I’d like to have in the future? Will I be able to do the introspective and transformational work required for me to become the type of leader I admire?

Maybe, because of your experiences and background, you have questions of your own that are different from the ones I asked myself: Will my partner want to move here? Why are we even talking about LGBT identity in a business environment? Is there energy at Sloan around inclusion and intersectionality? Do the straight, cisgender students even accept LGBT people? Does the faculty? Does the staff?

I can certainly attempt to answer these questions for you in a blog post format, but I’m not sure that I’ll be able to capture the richness of the experience here. Sloan has far exceeded my expectations for what an LGBT safe space could feel like. Diversity and inclusion are topics that we discuss – not just when our case material demands it, but as a regular review of how structural racism, sexism, and heteronormativity might be affecting our behavior as leaders, peers, and students. Students put allyship into practice, rather than simply calling themselves “allies”: we try to earn it.

Part of what drew me to Sloan was its action learning approach, a pedagogy embedded in the culture of MIT by the school’s motto: mens et manus, or “mind and hand”. In the spirit of mens et manus, we invite you to Sloan on April 7th to experience the answers to whatever questions you might have about being an LGBT student here, as well as the MBA program and the admissions process. Please register here – we can’t wait to meet you!

    Jessie Kaiser

Jessica Kaiser is a first-year MBA candidate at MIT Sloan School of Management, with an interest in the applications of digital identity and analytic technology in enterprise management. Most recently, she was an early employee at Rocket Fuel, an artificial intelligence leader in programmatic advertising that went public in 2013. While there, she wore multiple hats: consulting for retail and travel clients on their digital marketing strategies and building a team that partnered with engineering to design non-standard client solutions. She majored in Mathematics and minored in Literature at Northwestern University, where she was the co-president of Rainbow Alliance. Thanks to AI, Jessica has free time with which she enjoys rugby, exercise, music, and overcooking her dinner.

mit sloan MIT Sloan School of Management features its interactive, customizable Ambassadors Program each fall and spring for prospective students, hosted by current students. The Ambassadors Program runs on Mondays and Thursdays throughout MIT Sloan’s spring semester, giving visiting prospective students the chance to choose from a range of options to design the visit that best fits their schedule and interests.

A full Ambassadors day beings with registration, followed by coffee with current students, attendance in a class, an information session with an Admissions representative, a second opportunity to attend a class, and then two campus tour options. Those who register are invited to pick and choose from the available sessions as they like. (Note, visitors are asked to attend only one class, but are given two time slots for ease of scheduling. Classes available to visitors change each day, and visitors may select the time of their class visit, but not the specific class.)

In addition to the regularly scheduled Monday and Thursday Ambassadors Days, Admissions Director Dawna Levenson in a recent post to her Director’s Blog highlighted two special Ambassadors Days scheduled later this month.

The first, Veteran’s Ambassadors Day , will take place on April 16th. Participants will attend multiple panel discussions and meet current student veterans, learning first-hand what MIT Sloan has to offer to veterans.

Then, on April 30th, MIT Sloan will host its LGBT Ambassadors Day . In addition to the regularly scheduled events available on other Ambassadors Days, attendees on this day also will meet with the MBA Program Office and LGBT Club members to learn more about the community at MIT Sloan as it relates to LGBT issues.

Learn more or register for MIT Sloan’s Ambassadors Days .
